Sustainable fashion, or eco-fashion as it’s referred to in some circles, is an emerging manufacturing process where clothes, shoes, and accessories are produced in an environmentally and socio economically sustainable manner. With more and more local designers banding together to promote the rise of sustainable
fashion on the continent, we’ve decided to share our 3 favourite, African eco-fashion brands to watch.
Lemlem is an artisanal-driven collection of chic items designed for women, children, men and interior spaces, created entirely in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Founded by international supermodel Liya Kebede, who serves as the creative director, the main collection is handwoven from natural cotton in Ethiopia and is steadily expanding partnerships with additional artisan groups across the diaspora. The brand employs 250 weavers in Addis Ababa and 5% of its sales goes to the Lemlem Foundation, which supports women artisans in Africa.
